Re-design the cover for the contemporary novel, Water for Elephants.
What is Water for Elephants?
Water for Elephants is a contemporary novel by Sara Gruen. It is a fictional historical romance novel. The story is told through a series of memories by Jacob Jankowski, the main character who was a veterinarian at a circus.
Design approach:
Since the elephant is a key character that causes the story to go on and leads to changes, I wanted it to be the dominant element on the front cover.
Because it is not immediately apparent that the novel is a love story surrounding the circus life, I designed the cover that includes a circus texture frame. Thumbnail illustrations of four key elements in the story fill the corners in a tarot card-like style. Color version on the front and outline version on the back.
The back featured the main characters, Jacob and Marlena, to emphasize the love story. The corner four thumbnails are turned into an outline version so they don't draw away the attention of the couple.
The typeface I used for the title is Carnivalee Freakshow because it perfectly fits with the theme of the circus. The body copy font is Gill Sans Std.
