[Book Design, 2021]

Project focus:

Re-design the cover for the classic novel, Gulliver’s Travels.

What is Gulliver's Travels?

Gulliver's Travels is a classic novel by Jonathan Swift, satirizing both human nature and the "travelers' tales" literary subgenre. The story is about the main character Lemuel Gulliver's voyages after he had a shipwreck and met people in different countries, and eventually discovered the dark side of humanity.

Design approach:

Instead of taking the children's book story scene illustration style, I wanted to focus more on the fact that the author was to reflect on human nature. It was to reflect how humans are ridiculous, petty, greedy, and proud.

Therefore, I designed these abstract shapes to represent human nature. The big purple shape represents the bad side of humanity and the small pink shape represents the good side of humanity, and the big purple shape is devouring the small pink shape.

The color choice of dark purple and pink was to emphasize the good and bad of humanity. For the typeface, I chose Yana because of the special treatment of the font that conveys the early 1700s well since the novel was published in 1726. The body copy font is Roboto.
